Blinded in an accident at seven, Arsenio learned from neighbors the tribal drumming traditions of the Arara, Karahali, Congolese and Lucumi. The brothers speak two tribal tongues. Like Muddy Waters and Bill Monroe, Arsenio is a key figure in the development of a new genre based on folksong. In this case the style is Afro-Cubano.」「The lead instrument, a tres, is three toned and double strung. Arsenio also plays a number of instruments of African origin, a marimbula, similar to the familiar African piano, and the botija, a jug. He has been in the U.S. since 1947, playing for dances in New York until his recent move to California two years ago. TAMBOR DE YUCA is an antiphonal song style of Congolese origin in which a group of men, singing to a drum beat, compete.
